What You Need To Know About Baking Soda and Heartburn

Baking Soda on Wooden Table

Can I take baking soda for heartburn relief? We often get asked this question by our customers who suffer from heartburn and acid indigestion.

Most likely they read a DIY remedy which suggests adding baking soda to a glass of water and drinking it to relieve symptoms.

But is baking soda the answer to getting relief? Here’s why Maty’s doesn’t recommend you take baking soda for heartburn.

The Warnings: Baking Soda and Heartburn

There are approximately 1,232 milligrams of sodium in one teaspoon of baking soda. The American Heart Assocation recommends no more than 2,300 mg with an ideal limit of no more than 1,500 mg per day for most adults. If you want to learn more, here is a great article all about salt by Health Ambition.

If you experience frequent heartburn or acid indigestion, using a DIY baking soda remedy could elevate your sodium levels. And if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, sodium levels are certainly something you do not want to increase.

There is a warning on Arm & Hammer Baking Soda’s package that clearly states: “Ask a doctor before use if you have a sodium-restricted diet.”

Other warnings on their packages include not to use it if you take a prescription since baking soda could interact with certain drugs. And there is a stomach warning which suggests you do not take it until the powder is completely dissolved to avoid serious injury.

It even recommends you not take it when overly full from food or drink. Isn’t that one of the triggers of acid indigestion and heartburn?

Heartburn and Acid Indigestion. What you need to know.

Millions of Americans suffer from acid reflux, heartburn, acid indigestion, or GERD. That burning feeling automatically makes you think there is too much acid in your digestive tract. So many people reach for baking soda or a prescription drug to temporarily lower their acid levels.

But the problem is not too much acid; it’s too little.

Approximately 90% of acid indigestion and heartburn sufferers have low acid levels. According to Dr. Jonathan Wright, “When we carefully test people over age forty who are having heartburn, indigestion, and gas, over 90 percent of the time, we find inadequate acid production by the stomach.”

And the worst part? If you lower acid levels in your system, you may be doing more harm than good. The acid in your stomach is needed to digest your food. It also helps kill off pathogens and dangerous microbes that can cause sickness, and possibly even cancer.

New research published in the Archives of Surgery claims that patients taking a particular class of drugs called PPIs were 61.3% and 81.5 % more likely to develop cancer of the esophagus.

Other side effects of these drugs include: nausea, diarrhea, seizures, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, edema, and the list goes on.

The key is to promote healthy acid levels in your digestive tract. You can do this naturally with Maty’s Acid Indigestion Relief Syrup.
