Petroleum Jelly On Your Skin: Why You Need To Think Twice
Did you know it only takes 26 seconds for anything on your skin to be absorbed into your bloodstream? That made us stop and think twice when we researched ingredients for our topical products.
Petroleum jelly and mineral oil (derived from petroleum) are found in a broad range of products used on the skin. While it is a ‘natural’ ingredient extracted from the earth, the refining process plays a huge part in whether or not it stays that way.
Petroleum Jelly and Mineral Oil: Why You Need to Avoid Them
We encourage you to do your research on whether or not you feel petroleum jelly and mineral oils are safe. At Maty’s our philosophy is, “If you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, then why would you put it on your skin?” We know that whatever you put on your skin quickly gets absorbed into the bloodstream. We prefer to put healthy ingredients on our skin, not chemicals.
If you feel the same way, then you might want to think twice about putting petroleum jelly and mineral oil on your skin. Here are some alarming reasons why:
Not As Refined As You Think
The problem with petroleum-based products is that they can be contaminated with a cancer-causing impurity called 1,4-dioxane during the manufacturing process. This chemical readily penetrates the skin.
While it can be removed, researchers at the Environmental Working Group (EWG) assessed the ingredients in 15,000 cosmetic/personal care products and found that 22 percent of them may be contaminated.
Are your products in that 22 percent?
It Can’t Be Broken Down
Our skin is perfectly capable of breaking down natural oils into constituent parts that benefit us. Petroleum jelly and mineral oil are not natural oils that our bodies recognize, so they don’t get metabolized.
Individual components of petroleum and mineral oil can get into our system and stay in our system for years. They don’t break down, so they accumulate over time.
You might want to think again before you place any petroleum-based products inside your nose to relieve dryness. Since your skin won’t absorb it, those contaminants could make their way down into your lungs and cause some real aggravation.
Your Skin Can’t Breathe
Since petroleum and mineral oil are “occlusive” agents, they form a film on your skin to prevent water loss. They block the pores, and in doing so, they prohibit the skin’s natural respiration process. Nothing gets in, and nothing gets out.
If you’re prone to acne, you understand what the problem is here. Blocked pores equal trapped dirt and oil. It’s like covering yourself in Saran Wrap. Healthy skin needs to breathe!
Barriers to Healing
Because petroleum jelly and mineral oil are essentially forming a barrier on your skin, it does not mean it is nourishing your skin. There are arguments that it locks in moisture, but let’s take a step back.
Your hands are dry. You put lotion on your dry hands. Now you’ve sealed off your dry hands. There’s nothing in petroleum jelly or mineral oil that’s going to help moisturize your hands or heal them.
You need ingredients that nourish the skin. Maty’s uses coconut oil, olive oil, and jojoba oil for this reason. They help nourish and heal the skin.
Petroleum Jelly and Mineral Oil: You Decide
Did you know that Europe and Canada are banning many petroleum-based products? And their rules are stricter than the United States!
Why take the risk when you have natural options that help heal your skin and nourish it safely? At Maty’s we only the purist ingredients in our products including our All Natural Baby Chest Rub, All Natural Vapor Rub, and our All Natural Baby Ointment. Our products always are and always will be petroleum free, chemical free, paraben free, sulfate free, and phthalates free. We never use artificial colors, hydrogenated oils, artificial fragrances, and toxic substances because it matters to us what we put on our skin. We have a hunch it matters to you too!
